President Murmu stresses urgency of speedy trials and access to justice
text_fieldsCuttack: President Droupadi Murmu highlighted the significance of expediting trials and ensuring justice for marginalised sections of society during the valedictory function of the 75th anniversary of the Orissa High Court in Cuttack. She urged legal professionals to set an example for the entire country by expeditiously delivering justice.
Addressing the gathering, President Murmu expressed concern over the plight of innocent individuals languishing in jails on trivial charges. She pointed out that many people are imprisoned for periods longer than the punishment stipulated for the crimes they are accused of, leading to the loss of important years of their lives. Additionally, victims lose hope when they do not witness the guilty facing legal consequences, making such delays a major concern.
Emphasising the constitutional priority to deliver justice to socially and economically underprivileged sections of society, President Murmu called for discussions on ensuring access to justice for the deprived sections, who may lack knowledge and resources.
Hailing from Odisha, President Murmu praised the efforts of the Orissa High Court in streamlining and accelerating the justice delivery system through modern, innovative, and technology-driven changes. "The High Court of Orissa has endeavoured to incorporate technological advancements in the justice delivery system," she commended.
Remembering the contributions of past and present Chief Justices, judges, advocates, and staff, President Murmu acknowledged their dedication, loyalty, and vast knowledge that has contributed to the reputation of the Orissa High Court.
Addressing the environmental challenges faced by the region, including natural calamities, the President sought the judiciary's intervention, along with the executive and legislature, in safeguarding the environment and wildlife.
During the celebrations, the Orissa High Court achieved a rare feat with a division bench delivering 75 judgments in a single day, and for the first time, a verdict was pronounced in the Odia language.
Historically, Odisha was under the jurisdiction of the Calcutta High Court when it was a part of the Bengal province during British colonial rule. After the formation of the new provinces of Bihar and Orissa, Patna High Court was established in 1916, with jurisdiction over 11 judgeships in Bihar and one in Odisha. Before the establishment of the Orissa High Court, Patna High Court conducted sessions in Cuttack.
The event commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Orissa High Court saw reflections on its legacy, achievements, and a call for continued efforts to ensure justice for all segments of society.
