Chennai: An FIR has been filed against Nupur J Sharma, the editor-in-chief of OpIndia, and Rahul Roshan, the website’s CEO for allegedly promoting enmity between groups. The action is over Op India claiming that Hindi-speaking migrant labourers are being assaulted and killed in Tamil Nadu.

Several of the alleged proof videos of the claim were debunked by fact-checking news site Alt News. The videos were proven to be unrelated to migrant workers.

OpIndia said at least 15 migrant workers had been brutally assaulted and the bodies of the dead were being returned to Bihar. The publication also claimed to have spoken to migrant workers. Leading Hindi daily Dainik Bhaskar also alleged that Biharis in Tamil Nadu are facing Talibani-style attacks.

The Tamil Nadu Labour Welfare and Skill Development in an official statement denied such attacks. The Bihar state government also sent a team to probe the matter and found that the allegations are indeed false.

The FIR is under IPC sections 153A (promoting enmity between groups) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief). The complaint was filed by Suryaprakash from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) IT Wing, reported The News Minute.
