The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has revised the accreditation process and eligibility criteria for institutions offering DNB, DrNB, FNB, and Diploma programmes across India.

The updated norms aim to align faculty qualifications with the latest standards set by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and streamline the accreditation process.

According to the official notification, post-MBBS diploma holders with a specific number of years of experience will now be recognized as consultants for accreditation purposes.

For DNB courses, a Post-MBBS Diploma holder with 13 years of post-diploma experience will be considered a Senior Consultant, while one with 10 years of experience will be recognised as a Junior Consultant in the same specialty. However, only one faculty member with a PG Diploma qualification will be allowed per department for accreditation. The remaining full-time faculty members must meet the existing minimum qualifications prescribed for the DNB course.

For Post-MBBS Diploma programmes, faculty with 10 years of post-diploma experience in the concerned specialty will be designated as Senior Consultant, and those with 7 years of experience will be recognised as Junior Consultant.

The notification also states that if the ongoing or applicant DNB/DrNB course serves as the main clinical department for an FNB course, both the FNB and DNB/DrNB applications will be considered as a single unit.

Additionally, hospitals that have distinct (non-overlapping) faculty, sufficient caseloads, and meet all other existing accreditation requirements will be permitted to run both 3-year and direct 6-year DrNB courses concurrently in the same specialty.

NBEMS stated that the revised criteria are intended to ensure greater consistency and efficiency in the accreditation of medical education programs across the country.
