Mumbai: The opposition against the government's proposal to convert the Mahalaxmi Racecourse in south Mumbai into a theme park and Mumbai Eye has gained significant momentum.

The Change.org petition has gathered over 24,000 signatures to "save Mahalaxmi Racecourse - the only green lung of Mumbai."

Mumbai Eye is similar to that of the iconic London Eye to facilitate tourists to get a vantage view of the city’s skyline.

Launched by Mumbai resident Tanuj Bhatia on January 13, the petition emphasises the racecourse's historical and environmental significance as a Grade II-B heritage site, existing for over 140 years, covering around 230 acres of natural terrain with mud, grass, and hundreds of old trees.

The petition contends that the racecourse is a vital green space, often frequented by thousands of citizens daily, serving as a crucial open area in the city. "It is the main, if not the only, green lung of Mumbai, and its importance to the lives of the residents of Mumbai cannot be undermined. It is the lifeline of the residents of Mumbai," says the petition.

The petition outlines the government's plans for the racecourse, including the development of a theme park, the construction of multi-storied residential and commercial buildings, and the proposed renewal of the Royal Western India Turf Club's (RWITC) lease for 40 years.

It expresses concern over potential restricted access to citizens, loss of greenery, and the impact on the city's open recreational space.

Critics oppose the state's plan to donate nearly Rs 100 crore to RWITC for constructing an exclusive modern clubhouse, arguing that public funds should not finance a private club. The fear is that a large part of the racecourse will become a members-only club, further limiting open space for the public.

While the government designates certain areas for public gardens and theme parks, the petition raises concerns about the potential concretisation of the ground, transforming permeable mud and grass into built-up areas. It questions the environmental friendliness of the proposal, expressing worries about irreversible changes to Mumbai's only open space and green lung.

The state's decision to build a theme park, Mumbai Eye, and renew the RWITC lease has sparked public discontent, with citizens urging authorities to reconsider the transformation of Mahalaxmi Racecourse, a vital green refuge in the heart of Mumbai.
