Mumbai club cancels Indian cricketer’s membership over father’s alleged ‘religious activities’

New Delhi: The Mumbai Gymkhana, one of the oldest clubs in the city, has cancelled the membership of cricketer, Jemimah Rodrigues.

The action comes after some members of the club alleged her father was using the club premises for ‘religious activities,’ The Wire reported.

It is reported citing The Indian Express that some members reportedly alleged that events were organized to ‘convert’ the ‘vulnerable’.

The decision to revoke Jemimah Rodrigues’s membership was taken at the annual general meeting of the club on Sunday.

Khar Gymkhana president Vivek Devnani said that ‘The honorary three-year membership given to Ms Jemimah Rodrigues was revoked pursuant to a resolution passed by the members who attended the general meeting held on October 20, 2024.’

Shiv Malhotra, member of the managing committee of the Gymkhana, reportedly said that ‘Jemimah Rodrigues’s father was attached to an organisation called Brother Manuel Ministries’.

Shiv Malhotra added that ‘They booked the presidential hall for almost a year and a half and held 35 events. We all know what was happening there’.

Shiv Malhotra alleged that conversion was ‘happening right under our nose’, adding that ‘There was dancing, expensive music equipment, big screens. As per Khar Gymkhana’s bye-laws Rule 4A of the constitution, Khar Gymkhana does not permit any religious activity’.

It is reported that Rodrigues and her father were not available for comments.
