Kozhikode: The owner of the boat that capsized in Thanur, Malappuram on Sunday evening was caught by the police. On Monday, police confirmed that Nasser was caught in the Elathur, Kozhikode beach area.

He was reportedly hiding in a house in the locality. Police earlier seized his vehicle and phone. He is booked for culpable homicide. Several complaints have been filed against him after the accident.

A senior police officer said that the owner has not been arrested formally. He will be brought to Malappuram, reported NDTV. Police have also nabbed Nasser's brother Salam, neighbour Shafi, and Salam's son.

The owner has been missing since the tragic event that killed 22 people including 15 children. According to Thanur police, the boat reportedly did not have a licence to function. A case was registered against the owner of the boat on Sunday itself.

The boat capsized near an estuary close to the Thoovaltheeram beach in the Tanur area around 7.30 pm.

The Kerala government has ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident and CM Pinarayi Vijayan said the special investigation team will be headed by Malappuram District Police Chief. Kerala Human Rights Commission also registered a case in connection with the tragedy.
