Embassy urges Indian students to stay indoors amid targeted mob attack Kyrgyzstan
text_fieldsIn response to recent violence targeting foreign students in Kyrgyzstan, the Indian government has issued an advisory urging its citizens to remain indoors. This precautionary measure follows a series of attacks in Bishkek, where several Pakistani students were injured in mob violence at their hostel.
The Indian Consulate, communicating via X (formerly Twitter), assured that they are in contact with Indian students in the region. They reported that the situation has currently stabilized but recommended students stay indoors and maintain communication with the embassy. A 24/7 contact number has been provided for immediate assistance.
Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has emphasized the importance of students staying in regular touch with the embassy, highlighting the government's close monitoring of the situation and commitment to ensuring the safety of Indian nationals in Bishkek.
The unrest appears to have escalated following a viral video depicting a fight between Kyrgyz and Egyptian students on May 13. This incident, coupled with heightened tensions, led to mobs targeting hostels predominantly occupied by international students from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
The Pakistani embassy in Kyrgyzstan confirmed the attacks, noting that several hostels and private residences of international students were targeted. Although there were initial social media reports claiming the deaths of three Pakistani students, the government has not verified any fatalities.
The Pakistani government has responded to the situation with urgency. The Pakistani embassy is actively engaged in providing assistance to affected students and ensuring their safety.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep concern over the situation, instructing the Pakistani Ambassador to offer all necessary support. He assured that his office is in constant contact with the embassy to monitor developments closely.
