Centre grants Dalai Lama Z-category security amid heightened threat perception
text_fieldsThe Indian government has granted Z-category security cover to Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, citing potential security threats, official sources confirmed on Thursday.
Following a directive from the Union Home Ministry, the VIP security wing of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will now be responsible for safeguarding the 89-year-old leader. The enhanced protection will ensure that CRPF commandos accompany him across all parts of the country.
Previously, the Dalai Lama's security was handled by the Himachal Pradesh Police, with additional coverage provided by local police forces whenever he traveled to Delhi or other locations. However, after a security review by central intelligence agencies, the government has decided to provide him with a uniform and comprehensive security arrangement.
A senior official stated that a dedicated team of approximately 30 CRPF commandos will operate in shifts to ensure his protection.
In a related development, the Home Ministry has also extended Z-category security to BJP leader Sambit Patra in Manipur. Patra, a Member of Parliament from Puri, has been overseeing the party's affairs in the state, which has experienced prolonged ethnic violence over the past two years.
