cancel

The Winter session of parliament began with the cancellation of three farm laws, one among the fastest legislative acts in the parliament's history. Lok Sabha passed the bill to cancel the controversial farm laws first. The bill was passed without any discussion.

The repeal of the three Acts was passed in Lok Sabha in the middle of sloganeering by Opposition party members. The Opposition objected to the passage of the bill in such hurry and without allowing any debate – though the Opposition were all for it. They had wanted to use the discussion to raise the related issues including the outstanding demand for a guarantee of the Minimum Support Price. Later the bill was passed in Rajya Sabha without any discussion.

The three Acts in question are Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020, and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill 2020.

India witnessed one of the most stubborn and consistent protests against the controversial bills in Delhi and its outskirts for almost a year. Farmers from Punjab and Hariyana were at the forefront leading the protest to the historic victory.
