In response to the increased instances of pet dog attacks, the central government has issued a directive to all states and Union Territories to prohibit the sale and breeding of 23 breeds of dogs deemed as 'ferocious.'

The move comes as a precautionary measure to safeguard human lives against potential threats posed by certain dog breeds.

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying revealed that numerous representations from citizens, citizen forums, and Animal Welfare Organizations prompted the decision to restrict these specific breeds from being kept as pets.

The identified breeds, including mixed and crossbreeds, have been labelled as both ferocious and dangerous for human interaction.

Among the list of banned breeds are well-known names such as Pitbull Terrier, American Bulldog, Rottweiler, and Mastiffs, along with several others including Tosa Inu, Dogo Argentino, and Central Asian Shepherd Dog. The central government has urged individuals who already own pets from these breeds to ensure their sterilization to prevent further breeding.

A spokesperson for the Department stated, "The above dog breeds, including crossbreeds, shall be prohibited for import, breeding, selling as pet dogs, and other purposes," reiterating the recommendations put forth by the expert panel.

This decision has sparked mixed reactions among pet owners and enthusiasts, with some lauding the government's proactive stance in ensuring public safety, while others expressing concerns over the implications for responsible pet ownership and the fate of beloved pets already in homes.
