BJP ally, NPP, opposes implementation of uniform civil code in Arunachal Pradesh
text_fieldsItanagar: The National People's Party (NPP) in Arunachal Pradesh, an ally of the BJP, has decided to oppose the immediate implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the northeastern state. The decision was made during the state executive meeting of the NPP on Saturday, as stated by NPP state general secretary Paknga Bage.
Despite being in alliance with the BJP on developmental issues, the NPP follows its own ideology, according to NPP state working president Likha Saaya. The party unanimously adopted a resolution during the meeting opposing the UCC, citing the diverse multi-ethnic and multi-tribal composition of the state, as well as its strong customary and traditional identity, explained Bage.
Bage further clarified that the NPP is opposing the UCC because Arunachal Pradesh has its own unique laws. The party has resolved to maintain the customary laws with certain modifications, aligning them with tribal practices. Bage emphasised the need for the state and central governments to focus on codifying the existing customary laws with necessary adjustments, rather than implementing the UCC.
The Uniform Civil Code pertains to a uniform set of laws on marriage, divorce, and inheritance that would be applicable to all Indian citizens regardless of their religion, tribe, or other local customs. The Law Commission initiated a fresh consultation process on the UCC on June 14, seeking input from stakeholders, including the public and recognised religious organisations.
Another resolution adopted at the NPP meeting was the demand for the revocation of the New Pension Scheme (NPS) and the reintroduction of the Old Pension Scheme. These resolutions will serve as the groundwork for the upcoming Assembly polls in Arunachal Pradesh scheduled for 2024, stated Bage.
NPP's state working president, Saaya, emphasised that the party is secular and holds no prejudice against any individual or religious group. Its primary objective is to ensure the overall development and welfare of every citizen in the state. The NPP currently holds four seats in the 60-member Arunachal Pradesh Assembly.
