Amit Shah assures no deportation of Myanmar refugees in Mizoram
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah conveyed to Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma that the Centre has no intention to deport Myanmar nationals who have sought asylum in the state since February 2021, until normalcy is reinstated in Myanmar.
In a meeting held in Delhi on Thursday, Shah discussed the significance of gathering biometric data of foreigners, a process that the previous state government had previously declined, the official statement confirmed.
Expressing his stance, he said, "I want the people of Mizoram to know that the Centre will not deport the Myanmar nationals seeking shelter in the state until normalcy returns there."
Following a military coup in Myanmar last year, over 31,000 individuals have sought refuge in Mizoram. Most of these individuals belong to the Chin community, sharing ethnic ties with the Mizos. While some reside in relief camps, others find shelter with relatives or in rented accommodations.
The discussion between the Union Home Minister and Lalduhoma also encompassed the Mizoram Maintenance of Household Registers Bill, pending approval from the President. Enacted in March 2019, the bill aims to identify foreigners and curb the inflow of illegal immigrants from neighboring nations.
The minister advised Lalduhoma to reconsider the Bill, making necessary amendments and enhancements before resubmission, as per the statement released.
