Ajit Pawar seeks to step down from leader of opposition position
text_fieldsSenior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar has requested the party leadership to release him from his role as the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly. He also asked for "any post" in the party organisation.
He made this appeal during the 24th Foundation Day event of the NCP in Mumbai.
During his speech, Pawar expressed his dissatisfaction with his current position, stating, "I am told that I don't act tough as the leader of the opposition." He further clarified that he had initially accepted the role at the request of the party's MLAs, despite not having a personal interest in the position. Pawar emphasised that the decision regarding his demand rests with the NCP leadership. "Assign me any post in the party organisation, and I will do complete justice to whatever responsibility I am entrusted with," he added. This indicated his willingness to take on a different role within the party.
Ajit Pawar assumed the position of Leader of the Opposition in July 2022 after the collapse of the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, in which he served as the deputy chief minister.
Notably, NCP chief Sharad Pawar recently appointed his daughter and Member of Parliament, Supriya Sule, as a working president, entrusting her with the responsibility for Maharashtra. Additionally, Praful Patel has been appointed as a working president for other states within the party.
