Ford releases satirical 'men's only car' ad on Women's day, hails women in auto industry
text_fieldsFord celebrated International Women's Day and Women's History Month with an ad campaign highlighting the inventions of women in the auto industry.
The ad is for the Ford Explorer Men's Only Edition. The satirical ad says the car is only for men but it will not have key features like GPS and rear view mirror because they were invented by women. The short video touted the contributions of women and showcased what the auto industry would have been without those trailblazers.
The ad narrated by Bryan Cranston says: "For the first time ever, we have completely reimagined the automobile. Introducing the Men's Only Ford Explorer, with no windshield wipers, no heater, no turn signals. Wait, no rearview mirror? No GPS? Are you kidding? Ah, it is missing all the parts created by women. Wow, whose great idea was that?"
It goes on to show photographs of several women who played key roles in the development of the auto industry and says: "This women's history month, Ford salutes the visionary automotive work by women past, present, and future."
Stephanie Kwolek (the innovator of tire and brake pads) Dr. Gladys West (the pioneer of the modern-day GPS), Florence Lawrence (a lead on brake and turn signals), Julia Matos (the Ford Mustang Mach-E D&R Engineer), Jackie DiMarco (vehicle programs director for the F-Series and commercial truck business), and Nicole Herrera (a CAE and vibration testing engineer) were seen in the video.
The frames showing the car also noted that the vehicle is not actually for sale.
