Group opens fire at crowd in New York on New Year; 10 wounded

New York: On New Year's Day, a group of men opened fire into a crowd gathered outside a nightclub in New York's Queens, injuring 10 people. The assailants fired at least 30 rounds, PTI reported.

The shooting happened on the same day a terror attack was carried out in New Orleans that killed 15 people.

Police officers received multiple 911 calls around 11:18 pm on Wednesday for "several people" shot outside the Amazura nightclub in Jamaica, Queens.

Police said three to four males were walking toward the venue and opened fire over 30 times in the direction of a group standing in line outside the event, striking multiple vehicles. Six females and four males, ranging in age from 16 to 20, were struck by bullets, NYPD officials said at a press conference on Thursday. The victims were mainly teenagers.

Police are searching for a light-coloured sedan in connection with the shooting. None of the victims are in critical condition and all are expected to survive, according to the NYPD.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) reassured the public that it was "not a terrorist attack".

Amazura has an expansive interior with a capacity for 4,000 people and regularly hosts DJs and live performances.

In New Orleans, a man "hell-bent on carnage" unleashed horror driving a vehicle bearing an Islamic State flag into a gathering celebrating the dawn of the New Year, killing 15 people and injuring at least 35, according to officials.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) named the man killed in a shootout with police as Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, 42, a US citizen from Texas.

The FBI said that they were "working to determine the subject's potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organisations".

So far, no terrorist group has claimed credit for the attack.

New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said the attacker "was hell-bent on creating the carnage that he did” and dodged barriers to drive into the iconic Bourbon Street, a venue famed for revelries in the city.
