Abu Dhabi to activate two new toll gates from May 4

Transport authorities in Abu Dhabi have installed two additional road toll gates, with charges set to begin next month as part of efforts to ease congestion across key routes.

The new gates are located on Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Street in Ghantoot and on Wahat Al Karama Street at the entry and exit points of Sheikh Zayed Street. Their addition increases the number of toll points in the Darb system to six.

The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) said the gates will be operational from Monday, May 4, and will run around the clock.

Motorists will be charged Dh4 each time they pass through the new gates, differing from the current pricing system applied to the existing four toll points.

At present, drivers pay Dh4 during peak hours from 7am to 9am and 3pm to 7pm, Monday to Saturday, with no charges outside those periods.

The ITC said the expansion aims to reduce traffic pressure, particularly during busy hours and improve traffic flow across the road network.

Exemptions will apply to senior citizens, people with disabilities, low-income citizens and retirees.

The authority said the locations were selected following traffic studies that assessed congestion levels, travel patterns and the availability of alternative routes.

For the Al Qurm toll gate on Wahat Al Karama Street, motorists can use Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Street or Arabian Gulf Street. Drivers near the Ghantoot toll gate can take Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Street as an alternative.
