Police arrested Ahmad Murtaza Abbasi, a chemical engineer, after a brief chase.
His father reportedly said Abbasi was not mentally stable.
Ahmad Murtaza Abbasi allegedly attacked on Sunday night Uttar Pradesh Provincial Armed Constabulary personnel at the Gorakhnath temple, where Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is the head priest, according to India Today.
A resident of the Civil Lines area of Gorakhpur, Abbasi graduated in chemical engineering from IIT-Mumbai in 2015.
A viral video reportedly showed Abbasi chasing cops with a sickle, as the policemen and passersby trying to stop him throwing bricks at him.
Abbasi's father Mohammad Munir says that his son has not been in the right mental state since 2017.
His marriage fell apart because of his mental state, he said, Abbasi underwent treatment in many cities.
ADG Gorakhpur Akhil Kumar said police was investing why Abbasi came to Gorakhnath temple as well as his connection with Mumbai.
Mohammad Munir is a legal advisor to many finance companies and his brother, a doctor, owns Abbasi Hospital in Gorakhpur.
The UP anti-terrorist squad is investigating the case.
