Madhya Pradesh: Three people have died after inhaling poisonous gas from a well in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh. Victims had entered the well to remove a motor.
The well was 60 feet deep. After inhaling the gas, all three fell unconscious and drowned, said Gourjhamar police station in-charge, Anand Singh. The state disaster emergency response force (SDERF) was called to recover the bodies. Further investigation has started.
The victims have been identified as Khilan Singh Lodhi (65), his son Netraj (25), and Sunil Patel (25). The incident took place in Pipariya village which is around 40 km away from the district headquarters.
Organic materials that end up at the bottom of unused wells release carbon monoxide when they start decaying. It will become carbon dioxide upon reacting with oxygen. Methane is also formed in water wells due to natural processes or drilling activity in the area. In some cases, victims suffocate and fall unconscious as these gases displace air and cause a lack of oxygen. However, carbon monoxide can cause a person to lose consciousness, and it is called the silent killer.
