Social media romance leads PoK man across Line of Control into Indian Army custody

Srinagar: A cross-border social media romance prompted a 22-year-old resident of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) to cross the Line of Control (LoC) into the Uri sector of north Kashmir, where he was detained by the Indian Army and subsequently handed over to the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

The Army’s Srinagar-based Chinar Corps confirmed the interception in a statement, noting that an intruder from PoK was spotted by alert troops whilst crossing the LoC in the Uri sector. The military statement added that vigilant troops maintained restraint during the encounter and surgically apprehended the individual.

Intelligence sources have identified the young man as Zeeshan Ahmad, a resident of Rankeri village in the Haveli Kahuta region of PoK. He was taken into custody near Silikote, a border village located in the Baramulla district of Uri.

During preliminary interrogation, Ahmad revealed that he had crossed the heavily fortified border to meet a young woman living in a frontier village in Uri. The duo had reportedly connected through a social media platform and subsequently developed a romantic relationship.

According to official sources, Ahmad had shared his personal grievances and ongoing family disputes with the woman during their routine online conversations. The woman reportedly advised him to escape his domestic troubles by crossing over into Jammu and Kashmir to start a new life.

Sources further stated that the woman explicitly instructed Ahmad to cross the LoC and immediately surrender to the Indian Army to ensure lenient treatment by legal authorities. She allegedly assured him that once any custodial or punishment period was served, he would be able to settle permanently in the Valley.

To verify the account, local authorities summoned the woman for questioning, during which she fully corroborated Ahmad’s version of events.

Whilst initial assessments suggest the incident is an unconventional case of cross-border romance, security agencies are remaining highly cautious. The Indian Army and local police are conducting a joint investigation to determine whether the romantic narrative is genuine or merely a cover story for espionage or subversive activities.
