651 Indian Army peacekeepers receive UN medals for service in DR Congo

A total of 651 Indian Army personnel serving with the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) were awarded the United Nations Medal during a ceremonial parade held at Permanent Operating Base Sake in eastern DR Congo on Friday.

The ceremony was attended by senior MONUSCO officials, Force Headquarters representatives, military commanders and other dignitaries, who recognised the Indian contingent for its service in one of the UN's most challenging peacekeeping missions.

The United Nations Medal is awarded to peacekeepers who complete a qualifying period of service under a UN mission and demonstrate commitment to the organisation's mandate.

The Indian contingent has been operating in eastern DR Congo, a region affected by armed conflict, insecurity and humanitarian crises. Their responsibilities have included protecting civilians, supporting local security efforts, facilitating humanitarian assistance, conducting patrols, securing vulnerable areas, and assisting displaced populations.

MONUSCO peacekeepers regularly operate in high-risk conditions as multiple armed groups continue to be active in the region.

The recognition highlights India's longstanding contribution to UN peacekeeping operations. India has consistently been among the largest troop-contributing countries to United Nations missions, deploying military personnel, observers, and medical teams to conflict zones around the world.

During the ceremony, senior UN officials commended the Indian contingent for maintaining high standards of professionalism while carrying out complex operational duties.

India has participated in nearly every major UN peacekeeping mission since the organisation's early years, with peacekeeping remaining a key element of its commitment to international peace and security.
