Prime Minister Narendra Modi will commission three indigenously built Indian Navy platforms — Dunagiri, Sanshodhak, and Agray — in Kolkata on June 21, in a move aimed at strengthening the country's maritime capabilities.
According to the Indian Navy, the three vessels represent key capabilities in maritime combat, hydrographic surveying, and anti-submarine warfare. All three were designed by the Navy's Warship Design Bureau and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata.
Dunagiri, the fifth Project 17A stealth frigate, is equipped with advanced weapons and sensors, including BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles and a medium-range surface-to-air missile system. The Navy said the warship would significantly enhance its combat capabilities.
Sanshodhak, the fourth Survey Vessel (Large), is designed to conduct coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys and collect oceanographic and geophysical data for defence and civilian applications. It is equipped with advanced survey systems, including autonomous underwater vehicles and remotely operated vehicles.
Agray, the fourth vessel in the Arnala-class anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft series, is designed to detect and engage underwater threats in coastal waters. It is equipped with lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers, and shallow-water sonar systems.
The Navy said the three platforms reflect a balanced approach to capability development by strengthening blue-water operations, improving maritime domain awareness, and enhancing coastal security.
According to the service, the vessels have more than 75 per cent indigenous content and demonstrate the growing capability of India's domestic shipbuilding industry. Their construction involved participation from over 200 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and generated substantial direct and indirect employment.
The Prime Minister's Office said the induction of the three platforms would significantly boost operational capabilities, improve maritime domain awareness, and strengthen the protection of India's coastal waters against evolving geopolitical threats.
