Mother kills 6-yr-old daughter in Navi Mumbai for not speaking Marathi

Navi Mumbai: In a shocking incident from Navi Mumbai, a woman allegedly murdered her six-year-old daughter because the child could not speak Marathi, sending shockwaves across the city.

The Kalamboli police arrested the mother after initial attempts were made to present the child’s death as a heart attack. Suspicious circumstances led the authorities to order a post-mortem, which revealed that the girl had died due to asphyxiation.

The case emerged from the Gurusankalp Housing Society in Sector-1, Kalamboli, where the 30-year-old woman reportedly strangled her daughter on the night of December 23. Following the incident, the child was rushed to a hospital, but was declared dead.

According to police, the family consists of an IT engineer husband and his wife, who holds a B.Sc. degree. Married in 2017, the couple had welcomed their daughter in 2019. From an early age, the child reportedly struggled with speech, mostly communicating in Hindi rather than Marathi, which allegedly became a source of recurring anger for the mother.

During the investigation, it emerged that the mother often expressed resentment about the child’s speech, repeatedly telling her husband, “I don’t want such a child; she doesn’t speak properly.” The husband had attempted to reason with her on several occasions.

On the night of the incident, the woman allegedly decided to kill the child. The child’s grandmother had visited the house that day, but could not meet her granddaughter. Later, upon returning home, the father found the child unresponsive.

Initially, the death was reported as a heart attack, but Senior Police Inspector Rajendra Kote of Kalamboli Police Station found the circumstances suspicious and ordered a post-mortem, which indicated airway obstruction, pointing towards asphyxiation.

Following this, the parents were questioned for nearly six hours, during which the mother allegedly confessed to strangling her daughter. She has since been arrested.

Investigations revealed that the woman was undergoing psychiatric treatment, and police continue to probe the case, including the mental condition of the accused.
