Rain delays start of India-South Africa Women’s World Cup final

Navi Mumbai: The start of the Women’s ODI World Cup final between India and South Africa at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy has been delayed due to rain. The toss is now expected at 3:00 PM, with play scheduled to begin at 3:30 PM.

Light rain began around noon, prompting the ground staff to cover the pitch and keep players inside their dugouts, halting pre-match warm-ups. Conditions improved around 2:00 PM when the rain eased and the sun briefly appeared, drawing cheers from the crowd as ground staff began removing the covers for inspection. However, puddles remain visible in certain outfield areas, requiring attention before play can begin.

Both teams have resumed warm-up routines while the ground staff continue work on the wet patches. Despite intermittent rain across Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Mumbai since early morning, fan enthusiasm remains high, with large crowds gathered outside the venue.

This marks the first time the Indian women’s team is contesting a World Cup final on home soil. Their dominant semifinal victory over defending champions Australia has fuelled massive interest, resulting in a surge in ticket demand and expectations of record-breaking attendance.

Both India and South Africa are chasing a maiden World Cup crown. India, having reached the final twice before (2005 and 2017), enter with a slight edge, bolstered by home support and familiarity with the venue. The hosts have already played three matches here, while South Africa are featuring at the Navi Mumbai ground for the first time in this tournament.

Fortunately for fans, the final has a reserve day. If rain interrupts play, the match will resume from where it left off. The ICC, however, will make every effort to complete the contest on Sunday, even if it requires a reduced-overs format.
