Hyderabad: The driver of an ATM cash replenishment van allegedly fled with Rs 17 lakh in Hyderabad on Tuesday, in what police described as a planned theft.
The incident took place on the Rein Bazaar–Santosh Nagar Main Road under the jurisdiction of IS Sadan Police Station while cash was being transported for ATM replenishment.
According to police, the driver allegedly took away Rs 17 lakh stored in a cash box inside the vehicle. After acquiring possession of the money, he reportedly escaped from the spot on a two-wheeler, leaving the cash van behind.
Police suspect that the accused had carefully planned the crime and executed it after taking advantage of his access to the cash.
Following the incident, the IS Sadan Police registered a case and began an investigation. Teams are analysing CCTV footage from the area to track the suspect’s movements.
Special teams have also been formed to trace and arrest the accused. Police suspect possible insider involvement and are investigating whether the driver had any accomplices.
Meanwhile, in another incident in Hyderabad, a Sub-Inspector of Police was caught red-handed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) while allegedly accepting a bribe.
V. Narsimhulu, posted at Gandhi Nagar Police Station, was caught after allegedly demanding Rs 1 lakh and accepting part of the amount, Rs 50,000.
ACB officials caught the SI at around 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday. According to the agency, the officer had demanded the bribe from a complainant to issue station bail and avoid harassment in connection with a case registered against him.
The ACB said the tainted bribe amount of Rs 50,000 was recovered from the possession of the accused officer at his instance.
The officer was arrested and produced before the Principal Special Judge for SPE and ACB cases. The matter remains under investigation.
The ACB has withheld the complainant’s details for security reasons.
