Cong's Deora calls for CAA amendment to accommodate Bangladeshi Hindus

Mumbai: Former minister and Congress leader Milind Deora said that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) should be amended to protect Bangladeshi Hindus fleeing from religious persecution. His suggestion comes right after the communal violence that took place in Cumilla, Bangladesh during the Durga puja celebrations.

Deora called the attacks on the pavilion "worrying". He also warned against attempts to "equate Indian Muslims with Bangladeshi Islamists." "India must also reject & thwart any communal attempt to equate Indian Muslims with Bangladeshi Islamists," he tweeted.

The senior Congress leader added that due to the escalating communal violence in Bangladesh, the CAA must be amended to protect and rehabilitate Bangladeshi Hindus fleeing religious persecution.

The CAA was designed to make the process of Indian Citizenship easier for Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

The Indian government had called Dhaka after the Cummilla incident sparked violence in various parts of the country. Temples in Chandpur's Hajiganj, Chattogram's Banshkhali, Cox's Bazar's Pekua were vandalised.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stated that anyone involved in the attacks on Hindu temples and Durga Puja will be brought to justice. The Hindus form 10% of Bangladesh's population.
