A school bus arrives at a reunification site after the Antioch High School shooting in Nashville, Tennessee, on January 22.

Washington: Two students were tragically killed in a shooting at Antioch High School in Nashville, Tennessee, on Wednesday, underscoring the ongoing gun violence crisis in the United States.

The shooting unfolded at 11:09 a.m. when 17-year-old Solomon Henderson opened fire inside the school, killing 16-year-old Josselin Corea Escalante before turning the weapon on himself. He died from a self-inflicted wound. A third student was injured, sustaining a grazing wound. The Metro Nashville Police Department received the first emergency call at 11:09 a.m., and upon arrival, officers determined the shooter was no longer a threat. The school was placed on lockdown as authorities worked to ensure the safety of the remaining students and reunite them with their families. The district confirmed that the shooter was no longer involved in the incident.

The school district (@MetroSchools) issued a statement via X, saying that Antioch High School was on lockdown due to shots being fired inside the building. It assured the public that Metro Police were on the scene and that the person responsible for the shooting was no longer a threat. The statement further explained that students would be gathered in the auditorium, and reunification efforts were underway.

This shooting follows a similar tragedy in Nashville nearly two years ago, which resulted in the deaths of three children and three adult staff members. In that case, the shooter was also killed by police.

The Wednesday incident is the first school shooting during President Donald Trump’s second term. The White House expressed condolences, stating that "The President and his team are monitoring the news out of Nashville. As details unfold, the White House offers its heartfelt thoughts and prayers to those impacted by this senseless tragedy and thanks the brave first responders."

School shootings have become an alarming and recurring issue in the U.S. According to Education Week, 39 school shootings were reported in 2024, marking the highest number since the organization began tracking such incidents in 2018. The average is more than two school shootings per month. Among the deadliest shootings in recent memory was the 2012 attack at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut, where 20 students and six adults were killed, and a 2018 shooting at a Florida school, which left 17 dead and 17 others wounded.

Overall, the Gun Violence Archive reported that 16,088 people were killed by gun violence in the U.S. in 2024, emphasizing the ongoing crisis that continues to devastate communities across the country.
