Houston: An armed assailant opened fire at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, on Tuesday, killing at least 18 children and a teacher, Associated Press reported.
The incident, which the Texas governor called as US's deadliest school shooting in years, is the latest among the latest in a series of shootings in the United States where the administration has not made an apt move to avoid such future incidents, Agence France-Presse reports.
The state governor, Governor Greg Abbott, told media that the assailant was also found dead later and added that he must have got killed by responding officers. He said that the shooter left his vehicle and entered Robb Elementary School, where he opened fire with a handgun and possibly a rifle too.
Earlier, local police had informed that a suspect was taken into custody after the shooting occurred, which was around noon.
The gruesome incident in the Texas school is the latest among a series of similar shootings in the United States. It was on May 14, an 18-year-old white man shot ten people at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York. The man was clad in body armour and armed with an AR-15 rifle, declared himself as a white supremacist and live-streamed his act. He reportedly targeted the store because of the African American population in the area.

The Tuesday incident was the deadliest since the 2018 killing of 14 high school students and three adult staff in Parkland, Florida, while it was the worst incident at an elementary school since the 2012 Hook shooting in Connecticut, which claimed 20 children's life along with six staff's.
