Left liberals are nervous after Trump’s victory: Italian PM Meloni

New York: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the Left ‘liberal network’ is reacting with hysteria to the rise of conservative leaders globally, adding that ‘people no longer believe in their lies’, according to NDTV.

Participating in the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington DC on Saturday by a video link, Prime Minister Meloni praised President Trump and Vice President JD Vance but attacked Left wing politicians.

PM Meloni claimed that liberals are increasingly frustrated after President Trump's return to the White House.

Taking on the Left liberals further, Prime Minister Meloni said: ‘When Bill Clinton and Tony Blair created the global leftist liberal network in the 90s, they were called statesmen’.

She added that ‘Today, when Trump, Meloni, (Javier) Milei, or maybe (Narendra) Modi talk, they are called a threat to democracy. This is the Left's double standard, but we are used to it. And the good news is people no longer believe in their lies. Despite all the mud they throw at us, citizens keep voting for us’.

Terming President Trump a steadfast leader, she said the Left is nervous after Trump’s victory and ‘their irritation has turned into hysteria. Not only because conservatives are winning, but because conservatives are now collaborating globally.’

PM Meloni, the leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, was the only head of government in Europe to attend Trump’s inauguration in January.

Her political adversaries in Rome came down heavily on her decision to address CPAC particularly after Steve Bannon, Trump's former chief strategist reportedly made a Nazi salute at the conference.

Elly Schlein, leader of Italy's center-left Democratic Party, asked her to ‘disassociate herself from this neo-fascist gathering’.

Ms Schlein added that Meloni has not said ‘a word for days about Trump's insults and frontal attacks on Ukraine and the European Union. She is unable to defend Italian and European interests because she does not want to displease the new American administration.’
