Head lawyer representing Aung San Suu Kyi banned from speaking about her case

Myanmar's ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi's head lawyer Khin Maung Zaw said that the authorities in the military-ruled country have imposed a gag order on him. He is now banned from talking about the case on the claim that his communications are causing instability.

Aung San Suu Kyi was detained and held in an undisclosed location in February after a military coup. Her lawyer is the only source of information on her trial and wellbeing. Myanmar's state media had not reported anything on her. There have been protests across the country for her release.

Aung San Suu Kyi only met her lawyers in court and has no other means of communication with the outside world. She is charged with breaking coronavirus protocols, illegally importing and possessing two-way radios, incitement to cause public alarm, and violating Myanmar's official secrets law.

The military government's order says that Khin Maung Zaw's communications may cause harassment, hurting a person who is acting in accordance with the law, may cause riots, and destabilise the public peace, reported The Guardian.

Zaw later wrote on Facebook that he had been banned from speaking to media, diplomats, international organisations, and foreign governments. He shared that the order alleged that some media are inciting fake information that could destabilise the country.

Aung San Suu Kyi was leading a democratic civilian government after being chosen in the 2015 election. The military had been ruling the country for 50 years. Myanmar was on the path to democracy and economic growth after authoritarian rule before the coup.
