New Delhi: After Johnny Depp won the defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard, her lawyer on Thursday said Heard cannot afford to pay the $10 million judgment she owes Johnny Depp.

Heard's financial problems came up during the trial after Terence Dougherty, an executive representing the American Civil Liberties Union for which Heard was an ambassador, which helped her craft the 2018 op-ed that led to Depp's defamation suit, testified a donation she pledged to the organization from her of $ 7 million divorce fund received from Depp.

Despite she promised $3.5 million, she is able to give only $3.1 million so far, because she is having "financial difficulties", according to Terence Dougherty.

A Virginia court on Wednesday ruled Amber Heard defamed Depp in 2018 writing an op-ed about being a victim of domestic abuse.

Heard's lawyer Elaine Bredehoft told the Today show, according to Forbes, the actor intends to appeal the ruling as there was "so much evidence' left out of the trail which lasted six weeks.

Bredehoft also said social media attention largely favouring Depp as well as often disparaging Heard influenced the outcome of the trial greatly.

The Depp VS Heard trial excited fans world over after the trial was streamed online to the viewing by over 23 million.

Heard countersued Depp for $ 100 million for a 2020 op-ed his lawyer wrote in the Daily Mail terming her claims of sex abuse a hoax.

Depp won his suit with the court judging Heard to pay $ 10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. Heard also won part of the case with the court awarding her $2 million in compensatory damages but with no punitive damages.

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard got married in 2015 and got divorced in 2017 after Heard accused Depp of physical violence.
