Ukraine: Supreme Court closes 2 cases on students' evacuation

New Delhi: The Supreme Court closed to cases regarding the Ukraine students' situation after the Union government submitted that it had completed the enormous job evacuating 22,500 Indian students stranded in war-hit Ukraine, PTI reported.

On Monday, A bench comprising Chief Justice NV Ramana and Justice Krishna Murari said that nothing remains in the matter since the students have reached back safe. The bench said so after taking Attorney General KK Venugopal's submission that the Union is looking into the representation submitted by the students whose studies have been disrupted due to the war.

"A mammoth job has been done by the government, and 22,500 students have been brought back. The government is looking into the representation (of students), and the government will look into it," Venugopal said. He added that let the government take the decision.

The government had informed the court on March 4 that it had evacuated 17,000 stranded students. This was after two pleas filed by Bengaluru resident Fathima Ahana and lawyer Vishal Tiwari.

Ahana demanded the court direct the Ministry of External Affairs to gather permission for her and others who were stranded then in Ukraine to cross the checkpoint in Moldova to enter Romania and board an Air India evacuation flight. She also sought the court to direct the ministry to take effective diplomatic steps to evacuate herself and others from the ex-Soviet. Tiwari also submitted a similar demand through his public interest litigation. He also raised the issue of the continuation of studies of those returned.
