Meta Platforms is laying off several hundred employees as part of a restructuring effort affecting teams across sales, recruiting, and its Reality Labs division.

The job cuts, which impact staff in the United States and international markets, are expected to affect fewer than 1,000 employees.

Some affected workers may be offered alternative roles or relocation opportunities within the company, according to people familiar with the matter.

Employees in the Reality Labs unit, which develops hardware such as virtual reality headsets and AI-enabled wearables, were asked to work remotely on Wednesday ahead of the layoffs.

A company spokesperson said restructuring is part of regular efforts to align teams with business goals and added that Meta is attempting to place impacted employees in other roles where possible.

The move comes as Meta significantly increases its spending on artificial intelligence. Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has outlined plans for record capital expenditure of up to $135 billion this year, with projections of $600 billion in US infrastructure investment by 2028.

The company has been integrating AI into its operations, with engineers already using AI tools to assist in coding and other tasks.

Meta has also reduced headcount earlier this year, with Reality Labs cutting more than 1,000 roles in January as the company shifted focus toward AI-driven products and scaled back some metaverse-related initiatives.
