Trump treated nuclear negotiation like a real estate transaction: Iran FM
text_fieldsIran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Wednesday accused US President Donald Trump of undermining nuclear negotiations and treating them “like a real estate transaction” amid escalating military tensions.
In a post on X, Araghchi said complex nuclear negotiations cannot succeed when clouded by what he described as big lies and unrealistic expectations. He added that the result was “bombing the negotiation table out of spite,” in an apparent reference to last week’s joint US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
He also accused Trump of betraying diplomacy and the American voters who elected him.
In an earlier interview with NBC News from Tehran, Araghchi dismissed calls for regime change following the strikes, calling it “mission impossible” and saying millions of Iranians support the current system.
The escalation followed weeks of indirect and direct talks between Tehran and Washington.
On February 6, 2026, the two sides held indirect nuclear discussions in Oman in the presence of the head of US Central Command. A second round took place in Geneva on February 17, even as Tehran announced a temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Further talks were held in Geneva on February 26 after the United States deployed one of its largest contingents of warplanes and aircraft to the region in decades.
On February 28, Israel and the United States launched coordinated strikes on Iranian targets under the names Operation Roaring Lion and Operation Epic Fury. Strikes were reported in Tehran, Isfahan, Qom, Karaj, and Kermanshah.
Iran later confirmed that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several family members were killed in the airstrikes and vowed retaliation.
