Riyadh: On the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Saudi Arabia pledged to continue its efforts to promote and protect human rights. In an event at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Saudi pledged that it would do so by aligning national legislation and practices with international human rights standards, Arab News reported.

The Kingdom had made other pledges, too, such as investing in its own position and global influence to improve its role in settling regional and international disputes. It will cooperate globally to keep the UN’s pillars intact. It also continues launching global human rights initiatives like the Initiative to Protect Children in the Cyber World and the Saudi and Middle East Green Initiatives.

Hala Al-Tuwaijri, Human Rights Commission chief, stated that the event was an opportunity to review what was accomplished in the past 75 years. Lessons could be drawn from events to shape human rights within an atmosphere of constructive dialogue and respect for global and cultural diversity, Arab News reported.

Saudi is a major player in the collective efforts of the global appeal for a ceasefire in Gaza. In November, it brought the attention of BRICS members to the Gaza problem.

Saudi stated before them that the brutal crimes against innocent civilians and the destruction of infrastructure, including health facilities and places of worship, in Gaza require a collective effort to stop this humanitarian catastrophe, which continues to worsen by the day and to come up with decisive solutions to it.

Saudi is also trying for a peace deal with the Houthis of Lebanon.
