Thiruvananthapuram: According to India Meteorological Department, the state of Kerala will have the onset of monsoon four days late, that is, on June 4 this year, The Indian Express reported.

Monsoon arrives in Kerala on June 1, normally marking the start of the four-month season. The four months of monsoon serve Kerala its 75 per cent of annual rainfall.

TIE refers to statistics that in Kerala onset of monsoon on June 1 only happened once in the last five years. In 2018 and 2022, it happened two days earlier, while in 2019 and 2021, it was a few days later than normal.

The news portal explains that the onset of the monsoon is just a marker for the start of the season and does not influence the amount of rainfall during the season.

Further, IMD warned that it is likely that isolated rains with thunder and lightning would fall in Kerala till May 20.

IMD advised people to avoid standing in open areas where lightning could be expected since thunderstorms are dangerous. The disaster management authorities alert suggests disconnecting electric appliances and avoiding going near them if connected while there are signs of a thunderstorm.
