Yemen court dismisses Kerala nurse’s appeal against death penalty in murder case
text_fieldsNew Delhi: The Supreme Court of Yemen has rejected an appeal against the death sentence of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya who has been jailed in the country since 2017.
Priaya, hailing from Kerala, has been convicted of murdering Yameni national Talal Abdo Mahdi having injected him with sedatives, according to NDTV.
It is reported that she committed the extreme act in order to retrieve her passport from his possession.
Meanwhile, Priya’s mother approached the Delhi High Court seeking permission to travel to Yamen to negotiate ‘ blood money ‘ or compensation with the victim’s family to secure her release.
Her plans hit a road block as there is a travel ban for Indians is place since 2017 due to the civil war happening in Yemen.
The Delhi High Court on Thursday asked Centre to decide within a week on the request by Priya's mother to travel to Yemen.
Advocate Subash Chandaran KP, representing Priya’s mother, told the court she has to be physically present in Yemen for negotiations with the victim’s family.
The travel ban blocks her from meeting the victim's family, which according to the lawyer is the only way to save Priya.
The Centre’s lawyer on Thursday told the court that recent relaxation in travel ban to Yemen, as given in a notification, allows Indian nationals to visit the country for specific reasons to a limited duration.
‘In view of the representation, let the present petition be treated as a representation. Respondent is directed to decide the representation within one week from today’ Justice Subramonium Prasad reportedly ordered.
