'Wanted’ Netanyahu posters appear in Delhi, foreign embassy staffer found behind it
text_fieldsThe appearance of ‘Wanted’ posters featuring a photo of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the diplomatic enclave of Chanakyapuri in Delhi led the Delhi Police to approach the Union Home Ministry after discovering that a foreign national working with the embassy of a Western European country was behind the posters.
The incident came to light early in the morning on May 29 when police personnel from the Chanakyapuri station spotted two such posters on electricity poles — one located near Carmel Convent School and another near the American Embassy School — both of which were removed following instructions from senior officials, reported The Indian Express.
Police reviewed footage from around 50 CCTV cameras in the area and identified a man, dressed in a blue shirt and black trousers, who had arrived on a bicycle at approximately 5.30 am and had placed one of the posters on a pole, eventually tracing his movements to a flat on Sardar Patel Marg.
When police visited the residence, they found that the man was employed with the embassy of a Western European nation, and although they documented his details, they left the premises without taking further action due to the diplomatic immunity attached to his position.
The Police Headquarters directed senior officers from the New Delhi range to compile a report, which was submitted to the Union Home Ministry for further coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs, while a formal response from the concerned authorities is still awaited.
Neither the embassy in question nor the Delhi Police’s spokesperson responded to inquiries about the incident, which has now raised concerns over the limits of diplomatic conduct and the response mechanisms available to law enforcement when dealing with foreign officials suspected of engaging in potentially provocative acts, the report said.
