Peaceful Eid: Muslims shower flower petals on security forces in Delhi
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Muslims in Delhi’s Uttam Nagar marked Eid al-Fitr with a symbolic gesture on Saturday, showering flower petals on police and Rapid Action Force personnel after offering prayers under tight security. The act, captured in a video verified by media outlets, showed locals expressing appreciation for the role of security forces in maintaining order during a tense period, according to a report by Hindustan Times.
The area has remained sensitive since communal clashes earlier this month linked to a dispute during Holi, and apparent threats of “khoon ki holi”. The violence began on March 4 when a water balloon thrown by a child hit a Muslim woman, triggering an altercation that escalated. A 26-year-old man, Tarun Kumar, later died from injuries sustained in the clashes. Police have arrested 14 individuals and apprehended two minors in connection with the incident.
Tensions were further heightened by allegations of threats of violence during Eid, prompting concerns of potential unrest. Acting on these fears, the Delhi High Court directed authorities to ensure robust security arrangements in the area until Ram Navami.
Heavy deployment of police and paramilitary forces, barricading, identity checks, and CCTV surveillance were implemented across Hastsal village and adjoining areas. Senior police officials said the situation remained peaceful, with prayers conducted without disruption, while urging residents to ignore rumours and maintain calm.
However, residents of Hastsal village reported a subdued Eid al-Fitr this year, with celebrations dampened by lingering tensions after recent clashes. Local vendors said business has sharply declined, with daily sales of traditional sevvaiyyan dropping significantly as people from nearby areas avoid the market due to fear.
Families also noted the absence of the usual festive atmosphere, including crowded markets and preparations. Children, who typically associate Eid with excitement, food, and shopping, expressed disappointment over the unusually quiet surroundings, reflecting the broader impact of unrest on community life.
