One out of five US student visas in 2022 were issued in India, says US ambassador

New Delhi: Indian students choosing the US for higher education is on the rise. One out of every five US student visas was issued in India in 2022. US Ambassador Eric Garcetti on Wednesday said that it is more than the proportion of the Indian population in the world.
Indian students make up over 21% of the international student population in the US.
He said more Indians come to the US as students than any other country in the world. "Indians have not only pursued education in the US but for decades have shown excellence. We are on track to process the highest number of visa applications for students in our history."
Data says that over 1,25,000 student visas were issued by the US Mission in India and in 2022, Indians were issued the highest numbers of H&L employment visas (65%) and F1 student visas (17.5%) worldwide. Over 1.2 million people from India also visited the US. This makes Indians one of the largest groups of international visitors to the US.
He was speaking at the seventh annual Student Visa Day by the US Mission in India. Consular Officers from New Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Mumbai interviewed almost 3,500 Indian student visa applicants. The ambassador on the occasion said that they will be making more visa appointments available for students this year than ever. "In the coming weeks, we will be releasing tens of thousands of student visa appointments for July and August."
