Following the central government's notification of his transfer, Madras High Court Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee left for Meghalaya on Wednesday. He shall be assuming charge as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court as per the notification dated November 15 transferring him to Meghalaya.

The SC collegium had recommended his transfer to Meghalaya on September 16, sparking protests from several groups, including Madras Bar Association and Madras High Court Advocates Association.

Furthermore, the advocate associations and 31 designated councils of the Madras HC sent a petition to the collegium stating that Banerjee had served at Madras HC only for ten months. Banerjee joined the Madras High Court on January 4, 2021. He was made the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court as he was serving in the Calcutta High Court.
