Looking forward to meet ‘friend’: PM Modi about upcoming visit to US
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his upcoming visit to the US will deepen both countries’ partnership in crucial sectors like technology, trade, and defence.
PM Modi’s visit to the US comes in the wake of President Donald Trump’s aggressive deportation drive of immigrants including Indians which caused outrage back home following reports that they were handcuffed.
PM Modi said that the visit would offer an opportunity to further his successful collaboration with President Trump from his previous term, NDTV reported
In a statement ahead of his departure, PM Modi said: ‘Although this will be our first meeting following his historic electoral victory and inauguration in January, I have a very warm recollection of working together in his first term in building a Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership between India and the US.’
Recalling his meeting with Trump in 2019 when he was in power, the prime minister said he was looking forward to meet his ‘friend’.
He will leave for France this evening to co-chair a summit on artificial intelligence, followed by a two-day visit to the US.
PM Modi’s visit to the US gathers importance following Trump administration’s continuing tariff threats alongside the deportation drive.
Adding further, the prime minister said that the visit would offer an opportunity to ‘build upon the successes of our collaboration in his first term and develop an agenda to further elevate and deepen our partnership, including in the areas of technology, trade, defence, energy, and supply chain resilience.’
It is reported that during his phone call with PM Modi last month President Trump emphasized that India should procure more arms and ammunition from the US, alongside calling for fair bilateral trading relationship.
