Inspired by Ukraine war, India to obtain more self-propelled guns
text_fieldsNew Delhi: India is mulling over adding more self-propelled long range artillery to its armoury after they were found effective in Russia's war in Ukraine, Bloomberg reported.
The decision comes after an official military study found effectiveness of long range artillery in deciding battle outcomes.
India will place an order for 400 of these guns, making the weapons a sixth of all artillery equipment in the country’s armoury.
The study reportedly pointed out that guns in static position are more likely to be destroyed in counterstrikes.
Most of the 100 self-propelled guns that India possess are currently deployed along the country’s border with China.
The 3,488 kilometer border has seen tense moments several times recently, with both countries showed willingness for talk.
The mostly Russian origin vintage guns that India has currently deployed cannot move on their own, according to the report.
The US-made light field guns that Indian military added to its armoury can be carried on helicopters.
The study found that the time required to locate and fire at a target should come down from five to 10 minutes to a minute.
The chief general of India's army, Manoj Pande reportedly told a seminar that military units are getting ‘remotely piloted aircraft and loiter ammunitions and swarm drones.’
To improve the country’s reach and firepower in the northern border, Pande said, more long range rockets and missiles are being added.
