China renames 11 places in Arunachal Pradesh, heating up border issues
text_fieldsNew Delhi: China has triggered another crisis in the border with India by naming 11 places in Arunachal Pradesh while calling the area 'Zangnan, the southern part of Tibet.'
The move is widely seen as part of its effort to ‘emphasis’ its claim over the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.
The third set of names in Chinese, Tibetan, and Pinyin characters following regulations on geographical names was released by China's Ministry of Civil Affairs.
Issued by the State Council, China's cabinet, the list has the details of two land areas, two residential areas, five mountain peaks, and two rivers, along with their subordinate administrative districts, according to India Today.
The state-run Global Times reported issuance of the third batch of standardised geographical names on Monday.
China previously in 2017 had come up with the first batch of names for six places which followed another batch of names for 15 places in 2021.
India earlier dismissed China's naming of places in Arunachal Pradesh, asserting the state is an integral part of India and assigning invented names does not change this fact.
Meanwhile, Chinese experts reportedly said naming of place is ‘a legitimate move and China's sovereign right to standardise geographical names’.
