CAA to be implemented once COVID vaccination drive is over: Amit Shah

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah once again emphasised the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act soon after the ongoing COVID vaccination is over.

Shah made this statement as an assurance to Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal assembly, who met the minister in connection with the works to be done to strengthen the BJP in the state.

The controversial Act, which is widely criticised as biased on religious grounds, has provisions to give citizenship to illegal migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians.

The Central government is yet to frame rules to implement the CAA, which was passed by Parliament on December 11, 2019. Minister Shah underlined his determination to implement the Act despite vehement protests from Opposition parties.

The government launched the precautionary dose vaccination in April and it is expected to be completed in nine months.
