BJP legislator claims he received threatening calls over hijab row
text_fieldsRaghupathi Bhat, a BJP MLA from Udupi, claims to have received threatening calls amid the hijab row in Karnataka.
"The call has been made through the internet from Hyderabad. The police have suggested security measures. I am safe in my community, and I don't want to be a target of threats," Raghupathi Bhat said. "I am not someone who can be burdened down by the threats," he added.
"Pakistan TV and Al-Jazeera TV are portraying the wearing of hijab as being banned in Udupi district. Many have called me threatening after seeing that. I have not made any objections to religion during the hijab row. My stand on this issue is correct. All Muslim local leaders agree with my stance." he said
The Hijab Row started at Udupi Girl's Pre-University College from where MLA Raghupathi Bhat is the President of the School Development and Management Committee (SDMC).
He has also stated that he is constantly receiving phone threats. He has previously invited Muslim students to refrain from coming to campus if they are wearing hijab as it will spoil the academic activity of 1,000 plus students in the college.
Pre-university college students in Karnataka have been given a holiday until February 15 amidst the uneasy calm caused by the hijab row.
Amid the turmoil resulting from the hijab crisis, the Karnataka government declared a holiday for the 11th and 12th-grade colleges on Saturday.
State authorities have issued a circular saying that the order has been implemented to maintain law and order in the state. The order says it applies to all public, aided, and unaided Pre-University Colleges in the state.
