Kolkata: Bangladesh MP Anwar Ul Azim, who had been missing for the past nine days from Kolkata where he had rented a luxury flat in New Town, is now believed to have been murdered.

CID IG Akhilesh Kumar Chaturvedi confirmed the development on Wednesday, stating, "Anwar Ul Azim Anar has been missing since May 13. His daughter had tried to contact him but failed. A missing complaint was then registered here at the Baranagar police station. An SIT was formed to start an investigation and in the meantime, the West Bengal government got a letter from the Ministry of External Affairs to investigate the case. Today, we got an input that he has been murdered. We are trying our level best to solve this case. The CID is investigating the matter."

Police sources revealed that blood stains were found at Azim’s rented flat. However, the search for the MP’s body is ongoing. CCTV footage from the flat has been collected as part of the investigation.

Azim, a legislator from Bangladesh’s ruling Awami League, arrived in Kolkata on May 12 through the Gende border in West Bengal’s Nadia district. He first visited the house of a friend in Mondolpara, Baranagar. Three relatives who accompanied Azim informed the police that he initially mentioned coming to Kolkata for medical treatment but later indicated he had an important meeting in Delhi.

Following his disappearance, his family in Bangladesh filed a missing complaint with local police, and his friend in Baranagar filed a missing complaint in Kolkata on May 18. The Bangladesh police notified the Bidhannagar police commissionerate of Azim’s disappearance, leading to the detention of three individuals in connection with the case. A senior officer of the police commissionerate stated, "Our investigation is on. We have got leads."

In Bangladesh, Inspector-General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun told reporters, "Indian police and we are jointly working on this. We are cooperating with Indian police. We have not been informed that he has been murdered. We will confirm after we get details from Indian police. He was missing."

Anwar Ul Azim was elected from the Jhenaidah-4 parliament seat.
