Durgapur gangrape: ‘Shouldn't allow girls out at night’, Mamata Banerjee
text_fieldsKolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday said it was unfair to blame her government following the gangrape of an MBBS student near hospital premises in Durgapur, asserting that ‘a girl child at night-time shouldn't be allowed to come outside’, India Today reported.
The 23-year-old the MBBS student from Odisha, studying at a private medical college in Durgapur, nearly 170 kilometres from Kolkata, was gang-raped on Friday evening, triggering outrage in the country.
Alongside pointing out that her safety was the responsibility of the private medical college, Banerjee said that ‘Especially, a girl child at night-time shouldn't be allowed to come outside. They have to protect themselves also’.
Banerjee countered what she said ‘singling out of her government’ by asking ‘What action is being taken by the Odisha government?’ over the gang rape of a student at Odisha's Puri beach a month ago.
Meanwhile, the medical student’s father said ‘My daughter is in pain. She can't walk right now. She is bedridden’.
Pointing to her safety, he said he would take his daughter back home, saying ‘They could kill her here any moment. That's why we want to take her back to Odisha. Trust has been lost. We don't want her to stay in Bengal. She will pursue her education in Odisha’.
