Some people trying to take advantage of situation in Bangladesh: BNP leader

New Delhi: Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the general secretary of the Bangladesh National Nationalist Party, said the attack on minorities in the country including Hindus were not part of a ‘systemic agenda’ but blamed on ‘some people’ trying to take advantage of the situation, NDTV reported.

However, Alamgir claimed that extremist elements were not involved in the protests, which eventually led to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigning and leaving the country.

Alamgir made the remarks in an interview with NDTV just as the nation is further mired in crisis after Sheikh Hasina's ouster last week.

The BNP leader made it clear that the Bangladesh army will not interfere in the political process happening in the country.

Alamgir said Bangladesh’s chief justice was close to Hasina's regime that "killed many people" in the country, adding that student protests led to the Chief Justice stepping down.

Alamgir said: "The chief justice is known here as an associate of the former regime, which killed so many people in this country and extraordinary, unprecedented corruption was done during this period... So there was always a demand for his removal. He was not exactly free, fair and neutral and that's why the demand was very high."

Even the attempts were made to bring in a semblance of order in the country by installing an interim government, the country's chief justice agreed to step down on Saturday.

It is not yet clear if the election will be held anytime soon, with report claiming that the Khaleda Zia-led BNP will be playing a key role in whatever political outcome the current situation will play out.

Alamgir also said if Khaleda Zia comes to power, the party will work to improve the relationship between both countries.
