New York: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York on Monday just over a month after his visit to Ukraine on August 23.
PM Modi reportedly reassured his Ukrainian counterpart of India’s willingness to contribute to restoring peace to the region.
The second meeting between the two leaders in about a month showcases India’s growing interest in sorting out the crisis in the region.
PM Modi visited the war-torn country at the invitation of President Zelensky, becoming the first-ever Prime Minster to do so after both countries began diplomatic relations since 1992.
During PM Modi’s first visit, both leaders in a joint statement expressed interested in strengthening bilateral ties from a ‘comprehensive partnership to a strategic partnership in the future.’
It is reported that both leaders ‘reaffirmed’ their commitment to developing ties based on mutual trust, respect, and openness for the benefit of people of both countries alongside upholding principles of international law, including the UN Charter about respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty of states.
The statement also added that Prime Minister Modi ‘reiterated’ the importance of all stakeholders to contribute to early restoration of peace by developing innovative solutions with broad acceptability and he stressed about India’s willingness to contribute to bringing peace to the region.
The war that broke out after Russia invaded Ukraine has been continuing for over two years, causing significant losses on both sides with the West in an attempt to stop Russia put sanctions on it.
