Peruvian President ousted over corruption allegations

Peru President Martin Vizcarra will leave his post after the country's Congress voted in favour of his impeachment, Reuters news agency reported on Tuesday.

Alleging corruption charges against the 57- year old politician, a total of 105 congressmen voted in favor of impeachment, while 19 voted against and four abstained.

Manuel Merino, the Head of Congress is expected to serve as interim President until the presidential term ends. Peru's next term elections are scheduled for April 2021.

Vizcarra said he would leave the presidential palace immediately with his heads up high and not take any legal action.

This follows his survival of a previous impeachment attempt in September, where just 32 members voted in favour of his ouster. Vizcarra has vehemently denied the accusations against him for taking bribes during his serving time as governor.

Vizcarra is not affiliated with any political party, and has been contrasted with many politicians over his anti-corruption agenda. He dissolved Congress last year after a year-long-standoff over his anti-corruption reforms.
